Cascading Reels
What are Cascading Reels?
Cascading reels are a slot game mechanic where symbols involved in a winning combination disappear and new symbols drop into their place. This gives players the chance to create another win from the same spin.
The feature may also be called tumbling reels or avalanche reels depending on the game.
How Cascading Reels Work?
After a winning combination lands, the winning symbols are removed from the reels. The remaining symbols shift into the empty spaces and new ones appear to complete the grid.
If the new symbols create another winning combination, the process can repeat. Cascades usually continue until no new win is formed.
Some games add extra features during a cascade sequence, such as increasing multipliers or special symbols.
Why Cascading Reels Matter & Examples
Cascading reels can make a single spin more eventful because one initial result can lead to several consecutive winning combinations.
They also change the rhythm of a slot compared with traditional reels, where each spin normally produces one completed result before the next spin begins.
- Example: A winning group of symbols disappears from the reels. New symbols fall into those positions and create another winning combination, triggering a second cascade without requiring another spin.
